Best Time to Visit
We visited North Carolina in March, and we stayed for two years. The weather was perfect, with low humidity. Flowers were blooming, and the mountains looked fantastic. Because we stayed for two years, I can tell that the weather is great all year round.
The view of the mountains in the fall is breathtaking. It’s the perfect time for hiking or retrieving in a romantic cabin in the middle of the woods, enjoying the unforgettable views of the Appalachian.
Compared to other states, I could say that winter is not bad at all, even though there is a possibility to have some snow, there are still plenty of things to do during the winter in North Carolina.
Move Around North Carolina
Although North Carolina is famous for hiking trails in the mountains, you will need a car to go everywhere. Distance between recreation centers, parks, and cities are not covered by local transportation service.
Uptown Charlotte is the largest central business district in the Carolinas. Millionaire companies like Bank of America, Wells Fargo, and Duke Energy have their headquarters in this city. You will find NASCAR Hall of Fame, The Spectrum Center, Museums, Theaters, The Bank Of America Stadium, Bars, over 200 Restaurants, and nightspots.
The Epicenter is a shopping center with a trendy nightlife destination. A few blocks, you will find the 118th tallest building of the world Bank of America Corporate Center. The atmosphere in Uptown Charlotte will captivate your senses in every way.
Ride the Metro
The best way to visit Charlotte is by using the metro service, which, in my opinion, is clean, safe, and cheap. Each time we wanted to go to Uptown Charlotte, we parked at the nearest metro station. It is quite an enjoyable ride with views of the most delightful restaurants and nicest areas. You will see elegant people, and the most progressive city you can ever imagine.
Train stations are safe. Tickets are cheap, and you get them from a machine at the entrance. If you take the train from the last station, It takes around 20 minutes to get to uptown Charlotte. It will be fun, and you won’t have to worry about traffic or finding parking, which can be a real nightmare in uptown Charlotte.
How Long To Stay
You can visit the capital in a day. Charlotte is a vibrant city, and it has amazing shows and activities year-round, though. You may consider going back to watch a basketball game, visit NASCAR, clubs, gourmet restaurants, outdoor markets, museums, etc.
We stayed at the Aloft Charlotte Ballantyne. It has an excellent location and quit access to highways. It’s modern, gorgeous, and I can’t forget that comfy bed and pillows that I haven’t found in any other hotel. It’s 20 minutes away from Uptown Charlotte.
What To Eat
I can’t tell you enough about North Carolina and its famous high-quality cuisine. I mean, they love to cook and eat high-quality meals.
Uptown Charlotte has fantastic restaurants of all kinds. From the most famous franchise to high-end gourmet restaurants.
Biltmore Estate in Asheville
One of the most beautiful places in North Carolina The Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC. Biltmore is the most substantial home in America. Built by George Vanderbilt II, who amazed a fabulous fortune through railroads and other businesses.
The Dining Room Restaurant at Biltmore Estate gets local ingredients from the Estate and farms nearby. They cook beef and lamb in fascinating ways. You can be sure that visiting the Biltmore Estate is an extraordinary encounter, but eating at the Dining Room Restaurant will be unforgettable.
Admission tickets are no cheap, but they are worth every penny. The Estate is open year-round, and you will need to drive a vehicle to get to Biltmore.
The atmosphere and opulence of this majestic residence will keep you dreaming about an old era that is now gone — satisfaction guaranty.
Stay at least for one night at the Village Hotel on Biltmore Estate. It’s comfortable, and you will be able to enjoy and explore the 8,000 acres of Blue Ridge mountain, winery, exquisite restaurants, shops, live music, and so on. Well worth to stay.
Tubing or kayaking
One of the most famous things to do in North Carolina is taking a full day to go inner tubing, kayaking, or rafting. There are plenty of spots and companies that can offer you the ride of your dreams, and they all have the equipment available for rent.
If the plan is inner tubing, I will suggest buying your tubes instead of renting them. Usually, companies’ tubes are small and uncomfortable. So instead of having a blast, you could get a hell of neck pain that it can last for days. Check our tubes here, they are very comfortable and affordable.
A great spot to go tubing or kayaking is located in Saluda, NC. The company is Green River Cove Tubing, and it’s a family-owned business. They have a parking area, restrooms and in the office, you will find snacks and ice cream. They have reasonable prices with a 3-mile ride for only $10, and it lasts up to 3 hours.
Ride The Blue Ridge Parkway
The Blue Ridge Parkway is a long linear park best known for its scenic beauty and one of the most important areas to visit in North Carolina. It runs from Virginia to Cherokee, NC.
If you love to drive and photography, this is the drive! Make sure the weather is bright and sunny. Otherwise, when the clouds are there, or it is dark, it can be a terrifying ride.
It’s located right on the border between South and North Carolina. Thrilling roller coaster, food, shows, a water park, and lodging are available.
The park opens from March 21th to August 28th. Check their website here.
Chimney Rock State Park
Visit The Chimney Rock State Park. This park offers activities such as hiking trails, climbing, and even an opportunity to go under a waterfall. It’s kids-friendly, and it has convenient access to wheelchairs.
Hiking trails can be easy, moderate, or extreme. Rock climbing and rappelling are available to everyone, but a reservation is essential.
Explore Cherokee, NC
Located right in the smoky mountains, you will find the beautiful Cherokee, and you can explore it in a day. Make sure to try the famous cheese rat, trails, and Casino.
The best choice for couples or families is to stay at the Baymont by Wyndham Cherokee Smoky Mountains.
During fall and winter, the best option in Cherokee is to rent a cabin at the KOA. Cabins are gorgeous and fully equipped. They are immersed in a serene atmosphere where the whole family can enjoy the best that mother nature offers. The campground has a playground, indoor swimming pools, the possibility to roast marshmallows at night time. That’s what it’s called high-quality family time.
Our teens couldn’t get Wi-Fi on their phones because we were right in the middle of the mountains. Oh!, poor guys. After a while, they were in front of the fire, roasting marshmallows, talking, laughing, and having the best family time ever.
Dinner in Cherokee
If you feel like no cooking, drive for a few minutes from the KOA to the town where you can find a family-owned pizza place with the best cheese pizza ever. Also, visit the Casino with the best buffet restaurant around the area. It’s not cheap though, but you will crave it for a long time.
Hiking at The Grandfather’s Mountain
Visiting the Grandfather’s Mountain will be one of the best things to do in North Carolina ever. It’s a whole day activity to enjoy with family and friends. Grandfather’s peak is a mountain that towers over 5 thousand feet above the sea level.
One part of the Mountain is operated and preserved by a foundation. When you buy a ticket to access, the money goes to the preservation of the Mountain. Two other parts of the park are undeveloped and under the control of the State of NC. Access to this area is only on foot, it’s free, and it’s possible to hike for hours.
My taste goes toward the section controlled by the foundation. Tickets give you access by car to the top of the Mountain. You can cross over the metal bridge located over 5 thousand feet above the sea level. Indeed, quite an exciting experience.
At the top, you will find the astonishing view of Appalachians. Don’t forget your camera.
The US Whitewater Center in North Carolina
During the summer, practicing water sports in The US Whitewater Center is amazing. The center offers a variety of activities in one place; rafting, canoeing, kayaking, rappelling, tubing, water paddling, rock climbing, mountain biking, etc. During the winter, you can do Ice Skating and lights.
The US Whitewater Center offers fun activities for the family in a controlled environment year-round. You can learn, play, and relax. It has restaurants and convenience shows with live music, and so on.
