Whether you want only to walk on the beach, assist to an event, or practice water-sport and competitions, Detroit Lakes won’t disappoint, but there are many things to do in Detroit Lakes. We love these one or two days trips; spending the day exploring around the city, swimming in a great lake, and eating delicious meals from local restaurants.
This guide covers my favorite spots along the way. We left Fargo, ND, by 8 am. Our first stop to fill up the gas tank and get water and snacks. I want to make sure my stomach will be capable to eat tons of meals once we get to Detroit Lakes, so I got just a little snack and a drink.
From Fargo, we took Highway 10 east that goes all the way straight to Detroit Lakes.
Where We Stayed
We stayed at the Holiday Inn, Detroit Lakes. This hotel has a convenient indoor pool and sauna great for all seasons. Rooms have a private balcony with a stunning views of Detroit Lakes. The restaurant called “the Ice House” offers my favorite exquisite walleye, steaks, burgers, and salads. If you are staying in Detroit Lakes, I highly recommend this hotel but book in advance as it’s always full during high seasons.
Things to Do in Detroit Lakes MN
1. Visit the Shady Hollow Flea Market
One of the most exciting things to do in Detroit Lakes MN during the summer. This outdoor Flea market surely will not disappoint. It’s a great place to find good deals. There are a lot of vendors and the weather is always cool and breezy. Lots of different things to choose, whether you are looking for rusty junk, crafters, fashion and women’s clothing, and food. I think every weekend is different. It has something for everyone. If you forgot to bring something for your vacation, you may find it here.
The market is mostly outdoors with some shops inside and the parking area is a grass field. Wearing comfortable shoes is better.
2. Detroit Lakes Public Beach
You can walk one mile on the sandy beach, rest on a gigantic beach towel, or take a dip on the lake. There are people walking around, but it’s less crowded than you think. They have a variety of water sport events during the summer. There is a sidewalk along the beach with a tree lined that gives a great shade. Besides the wonderful views, there are restaurants nearby to please any palate.
3. Timberland Ranch
Eight minutes way from Detroit Lakes on Highway 25, you will find Timberland Ranch. Try something different and go for a horse ride, certainly it’s one of the less expected things to do in Detroit Lakes MN.
Ann the owner is very attentive and has a lot of experience with horses. You can ride a gentle trail for over an hour. Whether you are a novice or an experienced horse rider, the whole family will have a blast with an unforgettable experience.
4. K. & K Tubing
Easy to find on Highway 34, K & K Tubing is one of the best places in Detroit Lakes to go tubing with the whole family.
There is an office and a barn with restrooms and tubes. It’s convenient to follow the rules and leave keys, cellphones and important items in the car or office because chances are to lose them in the river.
We didn’t use their tubes. I think they are uncomfortable and small. We always take our tubes that are the right size and super comfortable. No neck pain and tons of fun. Check my favorite tubes here. If you want a double tube, check this one Here. We have the electric pump that makes it easier to fill the tubes. Check mine here.
Pay the fare of $7 per person and board a bus. They will drive you up to the river and leave you at the drop off area. Once you are in the water, you can relax. The slope is gradual, and it’s easy. It’s important to take sunscreen with you and water sandals. At the end, there is an up-hill to walk back to the barn with rocks, and that could hurt your feet.
5. Red Willow and Whitehouse Interiors
And last but not least, our favorite thing to do in Detroit lakes MN si to visit the Red Willow and Whitehouse Interiors
I love this place in Detroit Lakes and I always visit it with my husband. It has many beautiful things, gifts, souvenirs, and each week is different. It isn’t a good idea to take the little ones to this shop because halls are narrow and kids love to run through them, we all know if you break something you have to pay for it. The place is packed with gifts, kitchen gadget, wall art, seasonal decorations, etc. They always have something unique and fun.
If you liked these things to do in Detroit Lakes MN, my guess is that I will see you next summer there.
